Back to School Safety: School Zone Pedestrian Accidents

School is back in session for children in the Baltimore area, which means more traffic on the roads and more pedestrian activity in the morning and afternoon hours.

With pedestrian injuries on the rise nationwide, Maryland drivers require heightened attention in school zones and crosswalks this time of year due to presence of young pedestrians traveling to and from school.

Help keep school pedestrians and yourself injury-free by following these motorist safety tips to assist in avoiding accidents and citations in school zones during the school year:

1. Slow Down – Follow Posted Limits

  • Maryland Transportation Code 21-803 mandates reduced speed limits. Obey the school zone speed limit, often reduced to 15–25 mph.
  • Speeding near schools increases the chance of injury and fatal collisions.

2. Watch for Flashing Lights and Signs

  • School zone signs often have flashing beacons during active hours. When lights are flashing, reduced speed limits apply, and fines may double.
  • Follow signs indicating crosswalks, stop-for-pedestrian laws, and bus stops.

3. Stay Alert – Minimize Distractions

  • Put your phone down—it’s illegal in Maryland to use a handheld device while driving.
  • Keep your eyes on the road and be prepared to stop suddenly if a child darts out between cars.

4. Yield to Pedestrians in Crosswalks

  • Always yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks.
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk—there may be children crossing you can’t see.

5. Look for Crossing Guards and Children on Bikes

  • Obey crossing guard instructions—they’re legally authorized to direct traffic.
  • Watch for children on bikes, scooters, or skateboards, especially around elementary and middle schools.

6. Avoid Blocking Crosswalks or Intersections

  • When stopped at a red light or sign, make sure you leave the crosswalk clear for pedestrians.

7. Be Extra Cautious During Arrival and Dismissal Times

  • The most dangerous times are typically 7:00–8:30 am and 2:00–4:30 pm
  • Allow extra time for your commute to avoid rushing in school zones.
